First period kit: exactly what to pack
A first period kit is a small pouch you keep in your backpack (or nightstand) so you're never caught off guard. Here's the checklist that actually matters — nothing extra, nothing missing.
The essentials (must-have)
- 2 pads — one regular/day pad and one overnight pad (in case flow is heavier than you expect).
- 1 pantyliner — for spotting or "am I about to start?" days.
- 1 spare pair of underwear — dark colored, cotton, comfortable.
- Small ziplock or wet/dry bag — for used pads or stained underwear.
- Unscented wipes — a small travel pack, unscented is best (scented can irritate).
Nice-to-haves
- Pain reliever — ibuprofen or acetaminophen, if a parent has okayed it. Helps with cramps.
- Small snack — a granola bar or chocolate. Blood sugar dips can make cramps feel worse.
- Hair tie or small mirror — small comforts.
- Bloomy on your phone — one tap to log Day 1 and start your cycle prediction.
The pouch itself
Anything small and zippered works — a makeup bag, a pencil case, a fabric pouch. Pick something that looks like it could hold anything (not obviously "period kit") so it just lives in your backpack.
Where to keep it
- In your backpack — this is the main one.
- In your locker or gym bag — a backup.
- By your bed at home — a mini version with 1 pad and a pantyliner.
What NOT to worry about
You don't need tampons in your first period kit. Pads are easier and less stressful for a first period. You can add tampons or period underwear later, at your own pace. There's no "right" way.
What to do the day it arrives
Grab a pad from your kit, use the bathroom, take a breath, and log Day 1 in Bloomy. Then read what to do when you get your first period for a full walk-through.
